Soldier Instagrams About Avoiding Flag Salute, Stirs Controversy
THOUGHTS? THATS A LOT OF F's SHES GOT THERE.
An Instagram photo that appeared to show a soldier deliberately avoiding saluting the flag touched off a military investigation and a storm of criticism.

Base officials issued a statement Wednesday saying they are aware of a social media post allegedly made by Pfc. Tariqka Sheffey. Sheffey is a private first class, which is the lowest private in chain of command. She provides supplies and support to soldiers.

The photo’s caption read, "This is me laying back in my car hiding so I don't have to salute the (5 p.m. flag ceremony)."

Sheffey even appeared to realize what sort of firestorm she might ignite since the post continues, in all caps: "KEEP ALL YOUR ‘THATS SO DISRESPECTFUL/HOWRUDE/ETC.’ COMMENTS TO YOURSELF cuz, right now, IDGAFFFF." http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/sold...rsy-n39756

Please. If you've ever been on a military base look at the doors to the buildings right around the time they retire the colors and you'll find them crowded with people of all ranks 'holding back' so as not to get caught outside and stand at attention while the music plays and the flag comes down.

There is not one single current or former military member on this board who has not 'stayed late' or 'left early' to avoid it at least one time. And anyone who says otherwise is a liar.

She's just the idiot for posting it online.

QFT.

She got the reaction she was looking for, mostly because those that would react to something like this are easily stirred. I'm surprised no one has equated it to systematic destruction of the country yet.

I've run to avoid colors before because frankly, standing there at the same times everyday is just a waste of time and should be done away with.

In their own way, yes.

I don't think she was looking for any reaction other than "LOL" or "Word up" or "I'd buy THAT for a dollar" or whatever the kids say these days.

I also don't think it's a waste of time or something to be done away with. I think its a sign of respect and a valuable military tradition, and once you start doing away with military traditions you go from the people in service being those who have instilled in them the ideal of serving your nation with pride to glorified security guards.

IMHO, military tradition is important to maintaining unit cohesion and pride in the services, as well as fostering the military brotherhood. The more traditions such as these are done away with, the more our service-members resemble privateers.

The reason why the duty day ends at 1600 or 1630 and the colors are retired at 1700 is to alleviate any issues with thousands of people standing around and causing congestion getting on/off base.

Yeah, we'll agree to disagree on the value of useless traditions. Wink

I agree about her, though.

on a much larger scale...

here comes a point when the violations of a government becomes so extreme that citizens cannot possibly salute a flag that represents a government that has become so abhorrent that doing so shows poor character. If the United States has reached that level or not is in the eye of the beholder.

What if the US government becomes so tyrannical that they track every call made by every american?

What if the US government asks those joining the military if they would fire on their fellow citizens?

What if clearly unconstitutional laws are passed and the judicial system ignores their duty to invalidate them?

What if the government threatens you with force if you don't buy a product?

What if the US government starts throwing people in jail for accidentally and unknowingly importing the wrong orchid?

What if the us government throws a man in jail for having too many prescription pain killers but while that patient is in jail, increases their dosage of pain killers beyond the level that they where on when they were arrested?

What if the government is considering seizing some or all of a persons private retirement account to make up for shortfalls in social security?

What if the government funds foreign governments while refusing to fund the domestically unemployed?

What if the government creates so many business regulations that one needs a licence to cut flowers at a local florist, of which, the "training" costs about $2000?

What if the government can take your home because you don't want to have your power supplied by the electric company or you collect rain water to drink?

What if the government taxes 30% of your income or 40% or 50% or even up to 60% of your income.

What if the government is attacking nations that have not ever attacked you?

What if the government starts to take away rights?

What if the government starts to create and distribute propaganda?

What if the government forces your child to learn things contrary to your beliefs?

What if the government forces you to serve people that offend you, rather the KKK or the black panthers or harmless puppies?

What if the government starts to takes homes "for the common good", which to them is a shopping mall?

What happens if your government is putting people in prison for harming no one physically or financially, not even themselves?

What if the government reaches so far into your personal life that they dictate how much water you can use to flush your feces down a toilet?

What if the government tells you what you can and cannot eat?

What if the government starts censoring what you write?

What if the government removes private videos capturing police corruption?

What if you want to be free?

What if you understand that freedom isn't free?

What if you understand the cost of freedom is having to coexist with others that might use that freedom in way you disagree with?

What if you just want to be left alone?

What if you know that it is wrong to control what other people do so long as they harm no one?

What if you want to be left alone so long as you harm no one?

What if you want what the United States of America and its flag stood for?

What if you now realize your government no longer embraces... Freedom...?

Do you cave in and salute the flag that no longer, in your own mind, for whatever your reasons, represents what America was founded on?

Is it brave to say, no, I've had enough, I can no longer stomach the change, I can no longer support a government, a nation, and the flag for which it stands, that has turned from it's roots?

The real question is.... At what point will the level of tyranny, of corruption, of illegal governing, of this government, which is this nation, bad enough for YOU to stop saluting the flag for which it stands?
