Yeah.  That way the spikes can be fairly easily removed.  I'm going to make one modification once I get out there.  I'm going to put nuts with red loctite all the way at the top of the threads, so you can use a ratchet wrench to put them in.  Right now they're a little tight and you need to use pliers to turn them in.

You could always do a 90 degree bend in the top ones so that they face forward like bayonets. Cool

Paint it black. Tongue

I had originally planned on painting it black and putting the Bio-hazard symbol on it.  Then I got to thinking, I wanted it to look like it was something just made in the garage out of parts laying around, which it is.  If you look carefully at the one picture, you'll even notice one spike is out of alignment.

I didn't do a whole lot of measuring, pretty much eyeballed the entire thing.

Here's some more pictures:

The progression of the spikes.  Just regular bolts with the heads lopped off and ground down to a point on my bench grinder.

Brass ferrules.  The wood is too hard to screw these in, so I pressed them in with the vice.

The ferrules in the bat.

The latest modification.  Nuts threaded onto the spikes with red loctite to hold them in place.  Should make it easier to get them in and out.

Is it just me, or does that thing need an alignment?

There's some play in the steering, and right now it turns sharper to the right than to the left, but I haven't figured out why yet.

I'm going to be messing with the front end later this week as I have new bearings to put in all the hubs on the way.
