Sonoma-County-Deputies-Shoot-Kill-Boy-With-Toy-Assault-Rifle

Of course... It's a toy. I'm not picking sides on this one though.

Quote:Sonoma County Deputies Shoot, Kill Boy Carrying Replica Assault Rifle
Boy's father said his son wasn't hiding from anything, adding he was out in the open in the middle of the day when he was shot and killed

Two sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a 13-year-old boy carrying a replica assault rifle -- who they say wouldn’t drop it -- prompting outrage and grief in the typically quiet Northern California city of Santa Rosa.

The Sonoma County deputies on patrol saw the boy, identified as Andy Lopez, walking in a blue hoodie with what appeared to be a rifle at 3:14 p.m. Tuesday, Sheriff's Lt. Dennis O'Leary said in a statement. The replica gun resembled an AK-47 with a black magazine cartridge and brown butt, according to a photograph the sheriff released. It did not have the traditionally orange tip of a replica firearm. There is a photo of the fake gun and a real AK47 posted below.

Andy's father, Rodrigo Lopez, said he can't believe his son wouldn't listen to authorities if they asked him to drop the weapon. His son, he said, had a lot of respect for police.

"I sense that he did obey orders," Rodrigo Lopez said.

Other community members also stood behind the boy.

"He was not a gang member, he was an 8th grader," said Anita Ruiz, whose son was friends with the victim. "He was not a criminal, but yet he's dead. He's 13 years old. Couldn't something else have been done?"

I'm on the side of the police if it's true that they gave him orders to drop the weapon, a chance to respond and he failed to do so. Otherwise it gets a little sticky.

Sad story though.

You wouldn't be able to run as many people over with that car if it didn't drive as far. It should only have a 10 gallon fuel tank.

It is a very realistic looking toy gun, especially from a distance.

But it's Cali, and like most libtard states that are vehemently anti-gun the feel is that they have trained themselves to take a 'shoot first' approach.

Without being the one getting out of that police car, it's pretty damned hard to pass judgement.

The fact that the kid "turned towards them" may have been as simple as him responding to their commands. Who WOULDN'T "turn" to see who was talking/shouting at them? As he turns, the rifle will certainly follow.

Confusion. Bang. This.

It's a shame on many levels.

I think of two issues. One: unsupervised use of realistic firearms anywhere, let alone California, is a bad idea. Two: all police officers should have video recording devices that they can not manipulate... this would help to exonerate officers in justifiable shootings and use of force, as well as aid victims in the case of excessive or unjustified use of force.

The incident, as reported, supoorts the officer's statements, but there is no guarantee those statements are true... a side affect of the numerous cases we have all read about lately.
tolerance for failure meter... LOW

IMHO, this is likely what happened.

No, I wasn't there and do not have any way of truly knowing, but that's what seems the most feasible.

That gets back to the "must go home safe at the end of my shift" mentality and the whole shoot first, ask questions after mentality that causes tragedies when one could have been avoided.

Extremely tragic either way. I want the kid AND the cops to go home safe, but neither has priority over the other. They need to find a happy balance.

Marchers protest Calif. deputy's shooting of boy

Students from Elsie Allen High School and Lawrence Cook Middle School march...
SANTA ROSA, Calif. (AP) — Friends and neighbors of a 13-year-old boy who was shot and killed by a Northern California sheriff's deputy while carrying a pellet gun that looked like an assault rifle have marched to remember the teen and protest the shooting.

Hundreds of people turned out Wednesday night in Santa Rosa in support of Andy Lopez, who was fatally shot in the city a day earlier.

The Press Democrat of Santa Rosa reports that marchers chanted, "We need justice," and questioned how the deputy mistook a pellet gun for an assault rifle.

Authorities say one of two deputies who confronted Lopez repeatedly ordered him to drop the weapon and opened fire when Lopez turned toward them with it.

Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene.

This event is posted in another thread (not the march part) and it shows a picture of the gun. Looks real enough to me, from a distance I don't know how you'd be able to tell the difference.
