Squirrel Hill: Can't I just shoot at an outdoor range?
#1
Hi guys,

As you guys know, I'm newly moved here to PA. I found only one general indoor range for handgun, and can't seem to find a open outdoor range. Is everything here a exclusive, reclusive club? Or is there a normal, casual range that I can go to like a normal human being?

You guys seem cool on this forum here so I'm going to be more blunt than I am on PAFOA, but quite frankly I'm a bit shocked at the shooter mentality here that I feel like I'm beginning to encounter. It just seems a bit arrogant and elitist, that you have to apply, be judged, and then receive approval, just to be able to use a range. Is every outdoor rifle range like this? Where I come from, all the ranges were "pay the fee and listen to safety briefings and you're allowed to use the range" and "memberships" were if you wanted to pay a one time flat fee to use a range year round. Membership was optional and even if not approved for membership, you could just come as a regular paying member. Heck, even the "open" indoor range I went to wasn't friendly and accommodating. The guy at the desk might as well have said "crap, another one of these NEW guys."

Really, I can't go shooting outdoors without getting analyzed by some strangers first? And I need a sponsor? Am I applying for a US citizenship here?

Anyways, don't mean this bad on you guys, just give me a hand here if you can, I really want to go try out my Remington 700 after I'm done making a few changes to it. Don't make me miss California....I mean they're pretty commie over there, but if I can't even get into a range to use my stuff once in a while, then even CA might be better than here. Sad

Thanks in advance for the help fellas.

Where are you located? PMSC is the best club in the Pittsburgh area. None of the Fudd elitist bullshit at all of these other sportsman clubs.

Yes, you have to have a sponsor, but it's really not that difficult to join. Show up to two meetings and you're done.

I haven't been to a meeting since I joined, or anything else with the club for that matter. But, every time I go shoot, the place is almost always all mine.

I would like to be more active with the club, but my work schedule is prohibitive for that.

Not sure where you're located, but not all ranges are like that. Jonestown Fish & Game (in Jonestown/Lebanon area) is an outdoor-only range for like $25 a year. No references, no sponsor, no bullshit. You can shoot what you want as long as you clean up after yourself.

Thanks for the reply Justin! And I just updated my post to reflect my location. I'm in Squirrel Hill. I checked PMSC's website, looks like I just missed a member meeting. So I have to wait three months before I can even go shooting, since I need to get into two of their member meetings? And how would I go about getting a "sponsor"? Seems a bit silly if I have to stand outside their gates with a sign with "seeking sponsorship" print on it, haha.

Also thanks for the reply pinhead! Man, I'm getting answers already here! (PAFOA is bigger but my thread is being ignored, I love the camaraderie on PA2A.)

Sorry about posting no location, just updated. Squirrel Hill area, Pittsburgh PA. Is Jonestown Fish & Game close? I posted in the Allegheny County area of the forum, I think I did it right, but wouldn't be the first time I messed something up! Haha.

If I didn't work during the meetings, I'd sponsor you, but if you ask at PAFOA, you'll find a sponsor. It doesn't even have to be someone that you know.

You can also go as a guest with someone.

You're in a good spot to get to PMSC easily.

It's ok, I appreciate the sentiment, and definitely appreciate the information. Smile

Someone will eventually chime in at PAFOA. Additionally, they hold PAFOA group shoots there..., which anyone can go to.

Next one is 8/16.

I'm annoyed with the sponsoring thing too. If you're new to an area, or even if you're not and just don't know anyone who's a member its a huge pain.

It must be a liability thing to make it non-public, you can pick and choose who you want to come in and who you don't.

The one time I needed a sponsor, I asked at PAFOA and someone gave me their name to put on the form. Shot at the range a lot, and still never met my sponsor.

You could probably head down to Homewood and fire off a few shots, probably no one would notice. Smile

I've always said u can get away with shooting off one round without anyone calling 911... in Homewood the number jumps to five!
