Stuff to put on wood/coal/pellet stove to make the house smell good?
#1
I know this isn't exactly self-sufficiency related, but I think I'll get more responses in this forum since many of you guys have experience with biomass heating.

Anyway, I have this cast-iron pot thingy with a grated lid that I fill with water and put on top of my wood stove to add humidity to the house. Well, the other day I had the idea to add a teaspoon of cinnamon to the water, and sure enough it smelled like freshly baked cinnamon rolls in the house. I've been doing that ever since, but I thought maybe there was some other stuff I could add to the pot, in addition to, or as an alternative to the cinnamon.

So, anyone have any ideas? I got all kinds of stuff in the spice rack, but I don't know a thing about cooking, and I don't know what would work well.

You could try Vanilla extract, honey, and if you wanna get the little woman in the mood, Lavender.

Now that would just be a waste of bacon. Tongue

I'll try that, thanks. I also just threw some pine needles in the mix. So far it's not really strong, maybe I need to add more. Do pine needles go with cinnamon anyway? Shrug

How about some Hoppes number 9? I heard that's a real panty-dropper.

I doubt you'll get much from whole pine needles. If you were to crush/grind them you might get more.

Meh, sounds like a lot of work. I'll just throw about 10 times more in there.

Go to local store and look around scented candles and such. They make liquids that you can add to the water to send out a scent.

If you're sick, try putting the stuff made by VICKS for humidifiers. It will clear your head big time. After a while you get use to it and don't even notice it. But walk outside, come back in, and wammo.... your nose clears right up again.

I use to add potpourri to mine, but that was messy, you had to clean out the leaves. The liquids that you can buy, it just goes up with the water vapors. And you can get a ton of scents. Add more water, add a different scent.

BTW, you know what's better than the house smelling like cinnamon rolls because you dumped some in the water? Baking your own cinnamon rolls. I just might have to do that tomorrow. Smile
