Quote:Thinking the Unthinkable
...
In the wake of another horrific national tragedy, it’s easy to talk about guns. But it’s time to talk about mental illness.
...

I live with a son who is mentally ill. I love my son. But he terrifies me.

A few weeks ago, Michael pulled a knife and threatened to kill me and then himself after I asked him to return his overdue library books. His 7 and 9 year old siblings knew the safety plan—they ran to the car and locked the doors before I even asked them to. I managed to get the knife from Michael, then methodically collected all the sharp objects in the house into a single Tupperware container that now travels with me. Through it all, he continued to scream insults at me and threaten to kill or hurt me.

That conflict ended with three burly police officers and a paramedic wrestling my son onto a gurney for an expensive ambulance ride to the local emergency room. The mental hospital didn’t have any beds that day, and Michael calmed down nicely in the ER, so they sent us home with a prescription for Zyprexa and a follow-up visit with a local pediatric psychiatrist.

Oh my goodness, that's frightening.....

Other than wondering if he's "demon possessed".....um.... I guess they should really bring back psychiatric homes like they had in the past, like they locked Mrs. Lincoln up in, for bad cases like this. I mean.... you gotta feel so bad for these parents...what can they do? The drugs don't always help...and often they make it worse.

Mental issues are a hard thing to deal with. We say put them in a padded room, but we are insensitive. We say, they don't know what they are saying, and then tragedy can strike.

My cousin's step daughter was a shaken baby. And she has some violent tendencies. She has hit her aid before.

It is a painful thing to say. But maybe a group home would be better for some of these people with violent tendencies.
This will be the best security for maintaining our liberties. A nation of well-informed men who have been taught to know and prize the rights which God has given them cannot be enslaved. It is in the religion of ignorance that tyranny begins. -Ben Franklin

I see some of these folks in the ER. It's a dangerous business.

Mental illness is a very uncomfortable topic for most people and this society has a very hard time dealing with it rationally and reasonably. Too many health plans are too deficient in coverage for mental health care.

I have to say that there are legitimate cases that require sequestration of the mentally ill individual. This country had better get a grip on it and deal with it. If you're going to create whole new diagnostic categories of mental illness and place large patient groups in those categories, then provide proper treatment and monitoring. Their safety and ours depends upon it.
I don't suffer from insanity.
I enjoy every minute of it.

Try having to deal with mentally ill Marines. THAT is scary.

Seriously, we have had a series of shootings ove the last few years committed by clearly mentally ill or impaired individuals.

In each of these cases the authorities were not warned (Arizona, Colorado), were warned but did not follow-up (Va Tech), or a parent feared she could no longer control a mentally ill/disabled child/adult but had firearms in the home where they could be taken (Newtown, CN).

The issue is is how to deal with mental illness, firearms, and access to firearms.

It is a very real issue.
A gun rack in a pick-up is not for holding guns. Its a place for women to hold on to. Smile

I know first hand that mentally ill lunatics are allowed to continue to torment and harass their victims. The system is a joke.
