The nation’s big health insurers say they expect premiums to rise from 20 to 100 %

Some Americans could see their insurance bills double next year as the health care overhaul law expands coverage to millions of people.

The nation’s big health insurers say they expect premiums — or the cost for insurance coverage — to rise from 20 to 100 percent for millions of people due to changes that will occur when key provisions of the Affordable Care Act roll out in January 2014.

Mark Bertolini, CEO of Aetna Inc., one of the nation’s largest insurers, calls the price increases “premium rate shock.”

“We’ve done all the math, we’ve shared it with all the regulators, we’ve shared it with all the people in Washington that need to see it, and I think it’s a big concern,” Bertolini said during the company’s annual meeting with investors in December.

To be sure, there will be no across-the-board rate increases for everyone, and there’s no reliable national data on how many people could see increases. But the biggest price increases are expected to hit a group that represents a relatively small slice of the insured population. That includes some of the roughly 14 million people who buy their own insurance as opposed to being covered under employer-sponsored plans, and to a lesser extent, some employees of smaller companies.

If that happens, we lose our insurance. Which stinks, because I've been very thankful for it, even though its not cheap...because we have a child that's been needing some expensive care. We're at the highest end of what can be afforded without dropping it, so any more increases will leave us uninsured, or required to switch to state health care.

Which is scary because I have a friend in Texas with a very sick child on state health care and his care has been fight after fight because the hospital keeps trying to send the kid home (kid is 13 and suddenly can't walk and they want to send him home without testing him) because evidently they don't want to recommend any expensive tests.

Really, really scary.

I realize some of you are already uninsured or on state insurance, and its not that I'm spoiled...its just I've been so thankful for our insurance, as its been part of our job salary, and it would hurt so much to have to lose that. We did try changing to a cheaper one this year but they would not accept us (since evidently that idea of being forced to accept people isn't part of the law yet).

People are now (way to late) figuring out how effing destructive this is going to be.....AS INTENDED !!!!

If you think these Commies aren't trying to destroy us, either you are not paying attention or you're severely learning disabled.

I dont think they want to destroy us because that would mean the american population would turn away from socialism. I just think they are that stupid that they didnt see this coming... its all good news actually. The law of unintended consequences will hit full steam and the blow back will change everything for the better. Much like the gun control legislation

^^^^^ QFT!!! - The blowback from Obamacare and what it is doing to people between now and the mid terms next year is going to be astounding. It isn't beyond the realm of possibility that the Republicans could take the Senate and add seats in the House if they get their freaking act together. Of course if they keep acting like turd birds your guess is as good as mine as to what may happen.

The good news won't help much if everyone realizes WAYYY too late!!! This stuff has to be fixed BEFORE its enacted! It will be much too difficult to reverse once damage has been done.

People who lose their health insurance....even if they reverse ObamaCare...its not like the insurance companies are going to say "Oh okay, phew, you can come back now."

The damage will be permanent. Its too late. So no, its really not good news. Sad

I'm part of the "relatively small slice of the insured population" that "buys their own insurance".
I had no insurance for the last several years, but finally got a plan last year.
It's ridiculous though because all I'm doing is paying out of pocket anyway because the deductibles are so high in ADDITION to paying for the insurance coverage. If I'm severely injured, or hospitalized, it will pay to have, but otherwise, I am paying out the ass for nothing. PLUS I now get the headache of payments, and paperwork.

It will be interesting to see how long I can afford to keep health insurance at all.

Self employed and paying out of pocket to insure a family of four. Ive been waiting for the coming day of reckoning. Not that I expect it to wake anybody up except the small number of people that get screwed. I haven't a clue what we are going to do, I only know that we cant afford what the projections say it will be.

Sorry, no unintended consequences here.
Just like the gun control legislation this trash has been ready and waiting for YEARS.

They know exactly what they are doing. Why do you think people have been shouting from the rooftops about this Ocare shit.

Everybody knew except those who passed it.
I got a bridge to sell. Who's buying?

This was the plan from day one. Why do you suppose the fines to employers for not providing insurance are so small? The goal was always to drive the private insurers out of business and cause everyone to look to the exchanges for coverage. Eventually we will have a single payer system, which was exactly the plan.

Problem is, there will be no blowback here. You're talking about a country that just reelected Barack Obama. The media will run cover for him and the Democrats and the blame will fall on greedy insurance companies and business owners. No sir, we're headed to single payer government healh care as planned and the Democrats will escape unscathed because we are a nation of idiots.
