Thinking of building an AR Pistol
#1
So I'm looking at building an AR pistol. What I really get confused over is the different lengths. I'm thinking of making it an SBR eventually so I'm looking for advice on the barrel length.

I'll also take any other advice about building. I have built an AR before but obviously I can't put on a standard buffer tube and stock. I'm assuming I can buy an AR pistol lower parts kit?

It may be another year before I embark on this, but I'm wanting to get one too - but no SBR in the plans, just a faux SBR in the form of an arm brace.

The barrel length/lengths is something I was wondering about too, so I'll piggyback on here with you.

Im in the same boat. I've got other "not-a-rifle" plans in the works right now and an AR pistol will probably be the last thing I get. I'm thinking the ultimate setup would be with the KAK buffer tube, LOP shims with a brace, the Dolos quick change barrel system with 5 and 20 inch barrels. Sorta like this...

You'd have the best of both worlds and can pack it all away in a backpack.

I just build one. The 11.5" barrel looks long with the KAW Valley Brake on it. I may have it cut down even shorter, to just in front of the gas block, but mine has a carbine length gas system. It may cause some issues with cycling if I do. Sig brace is really cool. It really isn't much shorter than my 16" setup with the stock fully collapsed. Will post a few pics tonight after work.

The more I think about it the more an AR/AK pistol would make a perfect "truck gun". Since it's a pistol it can be loaded in the car here in PA. I would actually think about mounting it to the underside of the storage compartment lid in my Santa Fe...

FYI an SBR can also be loaded in a vehicle.

Ditto. Except you have to submit your fingerprints, get your sheriff's approval, pay an extra 200 dollars, wait six months to a year to get your stamp back from uncle sam yadda yadda yadda.

Fuck all that noise.

Plus some states don't allow SBR's. But they do allow pistols.

I realize that. I am tempted on setting up a trust to avoid the prints and CLEO. But while waiting for all that I have have the pistol with the brace.

Go trust route and eform. Forms are being approved in a matter of weeks with the new eform system.

ETA:

In fact don't even bother with the brace. eforms are being approved so fast, don't waste your money on a pistol tube and arm brace. Just buy the lower, build the upper, and assemble the whole thing as an SBR when the forms are approved.

I shot an AK47 pistol with the arm brace a few weeks ago at the group shoot and being that I'm on the smaller side the short stock was no issue for me.

The AK would be less money too, I'd think.

I dunno. I have time to figure it out. I just bought a rifle and the work off-season is approaching fast, so I won't be buying one anytime soon.
