Tree Growing Through West Philly Home
#1
http://www.myfoxphilly.com/story/1976610...hilly-home

Quote:A tree working its way inside the home of an elderly woman is doing some major damage and the woman tells Fox 29 she can't get anyone to do anything about it.

Fox 29 first introduced you to Anna Cummings Sunday night.

Cummings has a tarp covering the cracks and boards where the tree is growing inside the wall of her 54th Street home in West Philadelphia.

Cummings says the tree is pushing its way right through the bricks.

Cummings and her son, Dwayne Parker, tell Fox 29 reporter Dave Kinchen they've called everyone for help, including the city's 311 program but have been told that removing it is their responsibility.

After our story aired, a contractor offered to take a look at her home to see if there was anything they could do.

The contractor tells Fox 29 it doesn't look like the three can be removed without compromising the home.

Fox 29 will keep working to find a solution for her family.

I first saw this story and my first thoughts were that it's just another person looking for some sort of handout. And that's exactly what it is. I'm trying to figure out how in the hell you let a tree get so bad that it works it's way into a home. It takes years for that to happen! Why did you wait so long?! At some point you would have to notice the tree getting closer and closer. Stupid people...

Same thought as I was reading it. Your house, your problem. What's with this "can't get anyone else to do something about it mentality"?
Everytime we look the other way when someone else loses rights we disagree with, we make it easier to lose the rights we support.

I have to retract my initial statement, my first "thought" was that it was a tree on a vacant lot growing through her house and then, yest, the city should be responsible. But it's my understanding it's her tree.

Her son couldn't help? It wouldn't have cost much if anything at all to have properly maintained the tree years ago by taking a saw and little elbow grease to cut off tree limbs or the tree itself. The son's unemployment now or in the past had no bearing on letting his mother home go to shit.

I told my wife the same thing. Maybe they should have pruned that shit when they could afford it?

OK, I'll play devils advocate here, an elderly woman on a fixed income, tree surgeons are extremely expensive and from the size of the tree in the photo below, and it's proximity to power lines, it wouldn't have been cheap. How many old folks do you know that could afford that? The tree looks like it attacked from the roof side too, don't know how she could have seen it coming.

Just another point of view to consider.

Fair enuff... I can see the point with the power lines. But the first sign that a tree is destroying your home should be when you make the call, not a couple years later when it's too late and removal of said tree will mean your house is now going to be destroyed.

I cut down and cut up an entire tree (30 ft) that was causing problems for my mother. A little self-sufficiency go a long way.

My car currently that needs an oil change but runs great. Oh, let me run it into the ground by not maintaining it. Who's going to do something for me when the car no longer runs? Where can I apply to get a new car?
