University Of Chicago Removes Pews From 88-Year Old Chapel For Muslim Prayers
#1
In other words, they turned the chapel into a mosque

Quote:University of Chicago (UC) administrators permanently removed pews from an 88-year old chapel on campus in order to accommodate Islamic prayers, according to a local news report.

Chicago NPR affiliate, WBEZ news, reported on May 23, the pews, which are now part of display at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) Chicago, were “removed in order to provide Muslim students a place to pray.”

Literature describing the artwork that was created by UC Director of Arts and Public Life Theaster Gates, also describes the removal of the pews as symbol of religious tolerance.

“The pews were recently removed from the chapel in order to offer Muslim students a place to pray, a symbolic gesture of religious tolerance,” according to an official description of the exhibit which includes a “set of repurposed pews from the University of Chicago’s campus church.”

If you go to Europe, many of the old churches don't have pews. Never did. Kept things flexible. The rich had comfy chairs. The poor had benches; or stood. Pews are a relatively new "convenience." But in today's world, multi-use worship spaces are really best without fixed seating.

I have never understood why special interest groups need special treatment like this.

If you're Muslim, wouldn't you just want to go worship in your own mosque? I mean, usually, when people are religious, they go to a church that matches their religion....they don't ask other churches to make adjustments so they will feel more comfy there..????

Part of a general renovation. Note that the University of Chicago is a private non-denominational school.

Quote:“The benches were removed... to make Bond Chapel a more appropriate comfortable space for its many uses: ceremonial, spiritual, and artistic,” said Susie Allen.

Allen, however, said the primary purpose for the change, which was part of a broader renovation, was to “accommodate the installation of a Boroque-style organ.”

Well, while more logical and temperate folks would say "no big deal", and historians could point out the changing of cross to crescent and vice-versa throughout history, there are those who would view this as an unwanted incursion into Christendom.... while others would point out that the Muslim world wouldn't tolerate, not for one moment, the installation of pews (or any other non Islamic symbols) into their mosques.

But hey, all churches, synagogues, temples, and mosques are representations of the power of that religion's leaders first, and as a place to worship second.

That's why I avoid them.

There isn't a single mosque in Lackawanna County. The University of Scranton offered the use of its Arts building as one, and people went monkeyshit. Before that, Muslims had to drive to Lehigh or Monroe County to worship. That's a lot of driving. If the place offered a place for Muslims to pray, and offered to remove pews, why should anyone have a problem? The didn't storm the place, threatening a fucking jihad; it was offered to them.

Our non-denominational Christian Church got rid of pews about 4 or 5 years ago. We have interlocking folding chairs. This gives us the ability to configure chairs as we need to (events, VBS, kids plays etc). Sure we miss the pews, but we put the emphasis on worshiping Christ rather than on where we sit.

As for the school removing pews to make the chapel more inclusive, guess time will tell. It'll be inclusive up to the point the muslim student union takes over the building and chases everyone out. It's sad that past observation makes people think like this.....
