US Senators close to deal on expanded gun background checks
#1
Quote:A group of US Senators is reportedly set to present a proposal to expand the gun background check system, amid efforts to control gun-related violence in the country.

According to sources familiar with ongoing talks, Republicans Tom Coburn and Mark Kirk, and Democrats Chuck Schumer and Joe Manchin are “95 percent of the way there” and may well be able to resolve remaining differences.

The group of four has reportedly reached an agreement on expanding the background check to cover nearly all private sales and the concept of improving state mental illness data-sharing with federal agents.

The four Senators are now discussing possible exemptions, such as sales among family members, and making minor changes to the way background checks are done for private sales in certain rural areas.

It is reported that the group is attempting to agree on exempting those, who hold “conceal and carry” permits from background checks, making the proposal appealing for gun rights lawmakers.

I'm holding off on supporting it, but if it makes mental health checks easier and exempts LTCF holders, I can't say it's a bad law. I'm also waiting for the day when they start giving me forms to put people on the mental health check list. I got quite a few clients that would make Rambo nervous that shouldn't have access to a firearm...

We are getting something at the federal level, I expect background checks to be it.

The mental illness thing scares me. It's already in the system if you've been involuntarily committed to a mental institution. What more do they need? Do they want to see your records from any psychiatrist? They have no right right to see that information. And what will they do with that information? Will they deny anyone who has been diagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, or anxiety? That will only prevent sick people from getting the treatment they need, in fear that their firearms will be taken away from them. That will make the issue FAR worse, and we will see even more mass shootings.

I'd rather not see any new form of infringement. BUT, we often hear the word compromise thrown about, and how it applies to our side. Well, if there ARE going to be new laws, we should be hammering them on compromise as well. National reciprocity would be a good start.

If liberals can't ban guns, they will ban gun owners. Bill reveals the sneakiest attack on gun rights.

You do know some psychologists are for and some against guns and they base their opinions on factual stats?

THIS KIND OF DISCUSSION ALWAYS REMINDS ME OF THIS.

Anecdotal dialogue
Churchill: Madam, would you sleep with me for five million pounds?
Socialite: My goodness, Mr. Churchill… Well, I suppose… we would have to discuss terms, of course…
Churchill: Would you sleep with me for five pounds?
Socialite: Mr. Churchill, what kind of woman do you think I am?!
Churchill: Madam, we’ve already established that. Now we are haggling about the price.
(This is a very old joke where the participants vary dramatically from each telling. It’s very unlikely though not impossible that the joke originated from Churchill.)

Once you agree that gov. can deny any free man the use of arms, we have established it has the power to deny all free men the use of arms. Originally no free man was denied. Then the list started and grew.
1 Felons
2 Misdemeanors with a certain length punishment
3 Drug convictions
4 Domestic violence convictions
5 arbitrary mental health evaluations

How long will it be till one of the "5 billion federal, state,or local laws" that you will or have already broken be on that list?

The devil is in the details.

We will know when the bill is introduced.
A gun rack in a pick-up is not for holding guns. Its a place for women to hold on to. Smile
