USPS cuts Saturdays and will end weekend mail delivery Aug. 1 in order to trim costs. The USPS will continue package delivery on Saturdays.

By Pauline Jelinek, Associated Press / February 6, 2013

Washington

The USPS will cut Saturdays but continue to deliver packages six days a week under a plan aimed at saving about $2 billion, the financially struggling agency says.

In an announcement scheduled for later Wednesday, the postal service is expected to say the Saturdays mail cuts would begin in August.

The move accentuates one of the agency's strong points — package delivery has increased by 14 percent since 2010, officials say, while the delivery of letters and other mail has declined with the increasing use of email and other Internet use.

So I don't get Saturday's bills and junk mail delivery until Monday. No big whoop.

it's a done deal ....starts the week of august 5

should have done this 10 years ago.

theres no excuses not to do this as the main argument was it would delay S.S. and Disability checks which is a non issue because checks are no longer mailed ....all are direct deposit
It's the "BILL OF RIGHTS" not the bill of "needs"

So are they going to lower the cost of stamps? Granted losing Saturday mail service is not that big of a deal, I am still paying the same amount for less of a service.

Good god just privatize the damn USPS already. It is hemorrhaging tax dollars and I bet that it would run better privatized than the government could ever do.

In the event that the privatization of the USPS would ever happen, would UPS and FedEx logistically be able to pick up the mail business end?

sure, and if they don't, someone else will if they see ways to make it profitable. the reason they don't do it now is that it's illegal for anyone but the USPS to offer first class mail, per US law after Lysander Spooner (the great anarchist) opened up his own mail delivery service and was forcing the USPS to compete for customers.

the government DOES NOT like competition.

as others have mentioned...no sad faces here. when USPS HAS to increase it's delivery of junk mail (I recall reading something about this last year) just to keep some money coming in, you know your business model is off. now, that said, the government really does tie the hands of the people who should be making the business decisions within the postal service.
