Wait 30 seconds for searches???
#1
Why do we have to wait 30 seconds in between searches, especially when the initial search turns back no results?

Can this be changed please?

Search flood protection keeps the servers safe from overload when people hammer the search feature. I did back it down to 10 seconds...try that and see if is satisfactory.

A Reading from the Book of Armaments, Chapter 4, Verses 16 to 20:

Then did he raise on high the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, saying, "Bless this, O Lord, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy." And the people did rejoice and did feast upon the lambs and toads and tree-sloths and fruit-bats and orangutans and breakfast cereals ... Now did the Lord say, "First thou pullest the Holy Pin. Then thou must count to three. Three shall be the number of the counting and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither shalt thou count two, excepting that thou then proceedeth to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the number of the counting, be reached, then lobbest thou the Holy Hand Grenade in the direction of thine foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it."

That should help...not ideal IMHO, but you make a good point about flooding. 30 secs was WAY too long Smile

And using the unread post button counts as a search. I just used it to find the 1911 pic thread. But before hand I checked on new threads. I got the same message about the 30 second wait. Only it said I had 17 seconds left lol.

I can see the reasoning behind it. Just wish the unread button didn't count lol

I just hit the view unread posts button 2 times in a row and it did not produce any errors...maybe I am exempt as an admin but I don't see any other settings for it. Let me do some more digging!

It is annoying. I get that even for the initial search attempt which obviously shouldn't happen.

You can hit the view unread button as many times in a row and it won't delay you. If you hit view unread and then turn around and try searching for a keyword it will tell you to wait.

Searches are generally throttled because they are murder on the database in most common shared hosting solutions. Since this forum is hosted on a bit beefier setup it may be able to handle more. I think 10 seconds is probably a good happy medium. It may seem unreasonable to wait, but it will be nothing compared to a targeted flood attack against the forum.

I've had pretty good luck with the Google search feature that it tells you to use if you don't want to wait the 30 seconds. That's just me though, I know how much people hate that at the other place.
