Wal-Mart Executives Sweat Slow February Start in E-Mails
By Renee Dudley - 2013-02-15T19:16:04Z

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. had the worst sales start to a month in seven years as payroll-tax increases hit shoppers already battling a slow economy, according to internal e-mails obtained by Bloomberg News.

“In case you haven’t seen a sales report these days, February MTD sales are a total disaster,” Jerry Murray, Wal- Mart’s vice president of finance and logistics, said in a Feb. 12 e-mail to other executives, referring to month-to-date sales. “The worst start to a month I have seen in my ~7 years with the company.”

Wal-Mart and discounters such as Family Dollar Stores Inc. are bracing for a rise in the payroll tax to take a bigger bite from the paychecks of shoppers already dealing with elevated unemployment. The world’s largest retailer’s struggles come after executives expected a strong start to February because of the Super Bowl, milder weather and paycheck cycles, according to the minutes of a Feb. 1 officers meeting Bloomberg obtained.

Murray’s comments about February sales follow disappointing results from January, a month that Cameron Geiger, senior vice president of Wal-Mart U.S. Replenishment, said he was relieved to see end, according to a separate internal e-mail obtained by Bloomberg News.

“Have you ever had one of those weeks where your best- prepared plans weren’t good enough to accomplish everything you set out to do?” Geiger asked in a Feb. 1 e-mail to executives. “Well, we just had one of those weeks here at Walmart U.S. Where are all the customers? And where’s their money?”

People's ignorance is the problem. This wasn't a new tax and it certainly wasn't secret. If you raised your spending level when they gave the little break, I have no sympathy for you.

LOL....tell that to the low information voters/spenders and those who do NOT earn what they spend.

If anyone thinks that anyone in this country can keep up with just the sheer volume of bullshit legislation that's a joke.

It's all complex and confusing intentionally.

Every time, every single time legislation is passed it costs the taxpayer MORE money.

The best thing that could ever happen is suspend Congress for 25 years after they repeal almost every fricking thing of the last 25 years.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not supporting the tax, I'm merely shaking my head at how many people this caught by surprise and apparently hurt.

what's even more strange is that it was the democrats who pushed for the decrease in payroll taxes when they were dropped from 6% to 4%....

I don't think its saying taxpayers were necessarily caught by surprise...its just saying that that extra $20 taken out of the paycheck each week (or whatever) is an extra $20 the retailers aren't seeing each week, and it adds up fast.

Like I said, if you raised your spending level to match the temporarily lowered lowered tax, shame on you.

I get what you're saying....but it just means people are cutting out some luxury items they no longer need....you know? I don't think its "shameful" necessarily to start putting the money you used to buy Coke and Chips into your gas tank because you are being taxed extra.

I guess I'm just saying I'm not fully seeing what you gathered out of this particular article, but I agree with you in principle.

Surprise or not, its hitting retailers hard...and not just Walmart, I'm sure.

I am very fortunate and do pretty well. These takes hikes are costing the wife and I (we are DINKS) a few thousand $$ this year, which we are not spending. We don't sacifice our savings or 401K for a vacation or luxuries.

What I'm getting at is that why would the tax returning to "normal" levels affect walmart sales, at all? The only reason it would is because of the millions of people that were surprised when the tax went up.
