Weak hand EDC knife
#1
Friends,

I've taken a defensive knife class before, but I cannot seem to get "good" with a weak hand folding knife. I always struggle to open it, or deploy it, no matter how much I practice.

So, I'm thinking that maybe a fixed blade knife carried on the weak side would work. I'll have to get training again, of course.

Why do I want to carry a weak hand knife? To defend against potential gun grabs.

Any suggestions for a fixed blade EDC knife?

Thanks

Justin

I personally like the KaBar TDI knives.

Something else I would say as an option is a Cold Steel Safe Maker. I can't remember the other brand I usually recommend but it's a "push knife". Some people like them other people hate them. I don't like them all that much, but it's an option.

The TDI is a great option, but be aware that the factory sheath leaves a lot to be desired.

The Izula is also a great knife but as a defensive tool it falls a little short. Small handle (for me, I have average sized hands), pretty thick behind the edge, which will hinder slicing as well as the traction coating, which also hinders slicing.

Take a look at the La Griffe, either the Emerson or a Fred Perrin. Great knife, finger hole makes retention excellent. The Spyderco Spot and Swick are similar.

I carry the small TDI on my weak side occasionally. I don't look forward to defending myself with any knife, but if I had to, I'd prefer to use the TDI. It seems like it would be more difficult for the attacker to use the knife against you, because of the shape.

Thanks for the tips all. That tdi keeps coming up so I think that is what I'll try first.

They are cost effective too, compared to some of the alternatives.

Although it will nearly double the cost of the knife this sheath will make it significantly more usable.

A drone/trainer is also a good idea.

The TDI gets a lot of rave reviews. I've never used one, but I plan on changing that. Another option is the ESEE Izula. I switch back and forth for weakhand carry between a 5.11 Journeyman karambit folder, and a CRKT Plan B, which has been discontinued.
