So I was pretty fed up with Wegman's trying to scan my driver's license for the "honor" of buying beer from them, so I can risk identity-theft if their systems ever get compromised.
So I presented my LTCF. A state-issued photo ID, which includes my DOB. I was informed by the 25-year-old "manager" that "we don't accept concealed-carry licenses to establish age."
BTW, I'm in my 50's, and don't look under 21.
I can only conclude that this New York owned business just doesn't "approve" of the RKBA, and that is why they reject a perfectly valid ID that establishes age more reliably than a driver's license.
I left both my beer and my groceries behind and went up the road to where "common sense" prevails."

We stayed overnight in Geneva, NY a couple of years ago and we went in to the Wegman's there and picked up some groceries and some beer and started through the checkout line and they asked for ID. I handed the cashier my PA DL and she said she couldn't sell me beer, since they don't accept out of state ID. (I'm over 50 years old, it's not like I'm using a fake ID). They weren't scanning ID at the time, just looking at it. My LTCF doesn't have a picture on it.
I told her we were visiting from out of state and we don't have any local ID. I told her to get the manager, I'd be happy to wait, and I'm sure all these nice people behind me wouldn't mind waiting either. Or, I could just leave all the food on the checkout line, go somewhere else, and let them put my food away, including the stuff I got off the hot food line.
They sold me the beer. Doh!

I enjoy every minute of it.

When I opened up my credit card account at my bank I had to present 2 forms of ID. I used my DL and LTCF. They accepted my LTCF as a form of ID, but the bank lady had a horrified look. I simply replied "better to have it and not need it then need it and not have." Her horrific look went away, and she smiled while saying "I guess you're right."

So apparently the qualification for employment at Weggie's is the ability to be a total "droid" in defiance of "common sense." I.e., is the purchaser 21 years of age and entitled to buy beer.
Maybe they should just change the name to "Vegman's" Seig Heil!

If they get that locked up about it, they should stop selling alcohol.
My encounter was the most ignorant thing I'd ever seen when buying beer. In OP's case, they just wanted to hassle him.

Technically, if their rules state that it must be a state issued id, they would be correct in turning down an LTCF. Your LTCF is issued by your county, not the state and there is no state standard form. It is just a technicality but still.

Technically correct is the best kind of correct.

It is issued under the auspices of the state though, so it is a real, live, technicality.

Wegmans has to enter the ID into the computer to sell beer and the LTCF is not on the list of accepted ID's for purchasing Alcohol. DL, State Id Card, Military ID or Passport. I can't blame a store employee for following the law. And I have personal knowledge that most Wegmans are not Anti-Gun. They don't care if you CC or OC in their stores.

The law? Where exactly does PA State Law require to enter any kind of ID into a computer when purchasing beer?
Corporate policy is no fucking LAW. And I blame every fucking idiotic store employee for thinking and acting like it is. They are nothing but brain washed, incompetent morons. If you happen to be one of them, feel free to be embarrassed, because that is all you should feel. Do not feel offended for being told the truth.
