welp, AR virgin here. help my first time not suck.

now that ammo seems to be back on shelves, and rifles/parts aren't back ordered indefinitely, i was thinking of acquiring an evil black rifle. I'm torn between building an ar and buying one outright. i was thinking of a walmart le6920 or I may even buy a lower at a show and order a complete upper online.

so guys, what sorta stuff do us newbs get suckered into? any brands I should defintely avoid?

ideally, whatever I end up with, i'd like to be able to eventually swap out uppers for 5.56, 7.62x39, and (if I'm super lucky) .300blackout.

Daily deal

Blemished PSA M4 16'' CMV CL Upper - With BCG and Charging Handle
$359

I just picked up a new PSA upper WITHOUT the BCG or charging handle from a private seller for $280.
A BCG can run anywhere from $79 + and charging handles are $25+
I just ordered the $109 BCG from them, so right there I'm already past the deal posted above. (although I'm probably gettig a slightly better BCG)

Even if you don't make up your mind in time to snag that, it gives you something to work with for pricing.

A lower is $90+
A Lower Parts Kit is $50+
Not sure what a butt stock/buffer tube run - maybe $50?

Buying an assembled upper makes the rest pretty easy.
I have no desire to assemble one completely from scratch.

I don't recall anyone saying anything bad about PSA stuff.

ARs can be as simple, or as complicated as you want to make them.
The best part is that even if you start with a basic M4 carbine, you can change/upgrade parts at your leisure.

I have a Rock River Arms that I bought as a kit - completed upper and all other parts to be completed by adding a stripped lower - just like the $500 deal above. I mostly like it as is.

I decided to "build" another carbine with some other features/upgraded parts while the prices are back to "reasonable" again, so I just picked up a completed upper and the BCG.
I'll buy the rest of the parts as I can afford to do so.

I really don't know enough to tell you what to stay away from, but unless you want to be a high-end "operator", I think you'll do OK with just about anything out there.

Here's some clearance stuff at Primary Arms...

ETA:
This is a good price for a BCG AND a .22LR Conversion for $200 (conversions run almost that by themselves)

This site has a lot of options that are easy to view.
Even if you aren't buying from them, it may help you to understand the various options available a bit more clearly simply because the page layout doesn't require a ton of back and forth searching.

They list the Stag pricing, but not the others.

Nothing bad about PSA stuff, just about PSA.

I for one will never give them another dollar but that has nothing to do with the quality of their product.
