I don't actively do this as I still have a functional tap, but I'm a prepper and have 2 methods sitting in my garage that I'd use should the need arise. They are distillation and carbon filtration. I'm still not 100% sure about these, so I still fill up the bathtubs and sinks shortly before a severe storm. Water hasn't become an issue yet, but everything else did when I sat through Hurricane Irene in Southeast Virginia a few years ago. I've been focused on being prepared for the next time in areas where I was not prepared during that storm. It was ingenuity that got me through it and made the difference in taking care of my infant son. I also learned just how "on my own" I will be when shtf because my wife's employer kept her on the job for 3 days nonstop during the hurricane because she was considered "essential personnel".
Anyways, I digress. Sorry about that.

I use a sawyer mini filter inline with my camelbak. Works awesome. They are cheap, lightweight, and filter up to 100,000 gallons of water. I can fill up my camelbak in a stream and drink it right from the tube. Or hang the camelbak on a tree and gravity feed it into another container.

Not something I ever considered.
