What is 'looting'?
#1
This comes up time and again on various forums, in a SHTF situation looting is bound to happen. Look at post Katrina, Sandy and various other natural disasters. You'll always see people looting their local stores. But what is looting and is it ever acceptable?

Not looking for anyone to stand up and say they'd participate in 'looting' but how would you define it?

Two types, for one... Survival vs non- survival.

If I were looting in a shtf scenario, it would be food/water/useful materials. Not big screen TVs and iPods.
tolerance for failure meter... LOW

The only way I could ever find it to be acceptable is if you were breaking into an abandoned/unopened store to get food/water/medicine or other necessities and the situation was dire enough that it would not be reasonable or possible to obtain these things by any other means.

But that really isn't looting I suppose, more scavenging.

IMHO looting is really just plain thievery en masse, and we saw that in Katrina with people stealing electronics and the like.

On a related note to where I find it acceptable, cabins in remote wilderness areas are often "broken into" by lost/distressed campers hikers on an emergency basis, and while some items are consumed it is not considered stealing because necessity warrants it.

Looting is when someone steals items that are not needed for survival, items like televisions and stereos. Never acceptable

Survival is going into empty buildings and taking items that are needed for yourself and family to survive. Acceptable

Raiding would be taking items needed for survival by force or stealing other peoples needed items while they are not there. I will say it is not acceptable but when your children are starving .........

Regardless of what you want to call it...if the place is not abandoned, it's wrong.

According to CNN, during the Katrina disaster, if you're white, it's salvaging. If you're black, it's looting. I watched as commentators actually applied this double standard. It was pretty fucking sickening.

To me, looting is just theft, done during any chaotic event, taking advantage of the situation. Kids doing flash mobs in malls, hockey fans rioting after a game, student protestors gone wild...all these scenarios provide suitable siutations for looting.

Salvaging or scavenging is when you're forced to take, for survival.

How about pillaging? I guess that is done during wartime.

IMO, looting goes hand in hand with a riot.

In fairness to CNN, they were showing videos of blacks in the poorer neighborhoods breaking into electronics stores taking PlayStation's and Xbox's, along with TVs, DVD players, sneakers, etc. The videos they were showing of the whites in the better neighborhoods was of them breaking into their neighbors to try and find food and bottled water.

So, in that instance, they were not incorrect.

I had a friend who lived down there during this, and he told me that "I don't understand why they're so focused on the looting...they're always looting in that area."

I get your point though, I'm sure there were white who were looting and blacks who were salvaging too. But I didn't see anyone salvaging on the epic scale the looters were taking it to.

Had another friend from my old guard unit who went there to help, and said that it was brutal down there.
