looking to check the headspace on a mosin. also, how can I tell if I got all of the cosmoline out of the chamber? I can't really get a good angle of sight into the chamber with the borelight, even with the bolt removed. it's pretty shadowy.

Cosmo:

Have you tried cleaning it out yet? If so, are your patches coming out clean, even after hitting the chamber with a brush?

I use an industrial heat gun to reconstitute cosmoline. It's about 99% effective when the wood and other porous items are removed first. If it hardened in the chamber, you might need a small bristle-style chamber brush to clean it out. Perhaps in conjunction with a Tornado style brush.

Also consider treating the chamber with lacquer thinner or MEK as part of the process to alleviate any leftover lacquer from firing lacquer-coated cases.

And here's a fairly good article on sticky bolt issues if you need it later.

Gauges:

I'm on the other side of Penna, so you'll need to find a local source or order one for yourself.

I broke the rifle down. I boiled, scrubbed, and oiled all the metal parts. I poured boiling water down the bore, and swabbed it. I didn't have a brush on me, so I didn't brush the chamber, but I did run lots of patches through it. I used citrus cleaner on the stock's surface, but I'm sure the cosmolone is still in the wood.

is headspace checked by the importer? the part numbers match, but aren't the original numbers. the original mumbers are struckout.

do you use the heat gun on the stock as well or just on the metal parts?

Wood — LOW heat on the wood, paper towels galore to sop up the cosmo. Constantly watch the finish, the heat can damage it in the blink of an eye. I did it just long enough that the cosmo stopped leaching out of the wood, no more.

Metal — blast away with the heat gun on a Mosin. If you have an M44 or M38, don't get too ambitious around the front sight hood. This process is subjective, whatever you feel is enough is about right. I don't remove every last trace of cosmo, since it's a preservative that obviously wont hurt anything. The only real danger is cosmo inside the bore with a live round.

Chamber:
My last project is systematically wire-brushing all the Mosin chambers here to see if it prevents sticky-bolt syndrome. I plan to rig something up in a cordless drill that simultaneously sprays solvent during the process. I haven't decided whether to follow it up with fine steel wool or not.

Here's the brush (it's really cheap), it isn't here yet so I can't say how well it works. It's an Otis FG-368 if the link's gone

These look easier to use than mine, these are the newer button-style. I have the older ones that look like a top-hat.

it's nice that i don't have to knock off the extractor to test headspace, i suppose. if i'm ever in a position where i'll be out at a show purchasing mosins, it's definitely a good way to check headspace without earning the ire of the seller.
