White House Gun Control Petition Quickly Surpasses Required Signature Count

An online petition calling on the White House to immediately address the issue of gun control quickly surpassed the required number of signatures Friday, hours after the Connecticut elementary school massacre.

“The goal of this petition is to force the Obama Administration to produce legislation that limits access to guns,” the petition states in part. “While a national dialogue is critical, laws are the only means in which we can reduce the number of people murdered in gun related deaths.”

Petitions on the White House’s “We the People” online petition site require 25,000 signatures within a month to garner an official administration response. The petition met that goal Friday evening; by Saturday morning it had reached more than 68,000 signatures.

“Powerful lobbying groups allow the ownership of guns to reach beyond the Constitution’s intended purpose of the right to bear arms,” the petition states. “Therefore, Congress must act on what is stated law, and face the reality that access to firearms reaches beyond what the Second Amendment intends to achieve.”

White House press secretary Jay Carney on Friday demurred on the issue of gun control, saying it was a day to mourn, not to pursue policy.

“There is — I am sure will be, rather — a day for discussion of the usual Washington policy debates, but I do not think today is that day,” Carney said.

Speaking about the shooting later on Friday, President Barack Obama vowed to take “meaningful action” to prevent more such tragedies from taking place in the future.

I knew this was gonna be a bad one. The timing was perfect to enact gun legislation....

What would gun control do? why don't these people get it? the Oregon shooting was done with a stolen rifle, the CT shooting was done with stolen pistols.

the shooters were mentally defective and stole the weapons... how were stricter background checks and mental evaluations going to help in those situations? They weren't! Maybe the owners of the guns should have locked them up better...

This shit so pisses me off.

We've got just enough gun laws, like gun free zones, to tempt lunatics into committing mass murder. Adding more laws will give more lunatics additional targets.

Its looking like he gained entrance by shooting out or forcing a window.

So...he had an illegal weapon (for him), and he illegally gained entrance to the building.

There's not a law in the WORLD that could have prevented that. The ONLY thing that could have prevented that would have been an ARMED principal, because she was his first stop.

I'm getting SO angry at the foolishness of this government. I could scream!

My NRA membership renewed and I also bought some shit from the NRA store.

Got a concealed-carry hoodie. I like it.

Also have my GOA membership.

If you're not a member of either---for shame. The gun debates from the 80s and early 90s are starting back up. Time to make sure that crappy legislation doesn't sneak its way in.

Walk to talk about gun violence? Let's talk. I live in a state were judges are not doing much with the current slate of gun laws on the books and are handing out ankle bracelets to repeat gun offenders. They're not giving out consecutive sentences on their gun charges and are letting them run concurrent with their primary charges.

Where's the talk about fixing THAT PROBLEM? Huh
Oooh I want one of those CC hoodies. I went to the website (hadn't heard of it before) and it must be slammed....took quite awhile to load just now.

Yeah, but the number of people who did NOT sign is much much much larger.

Very true. I really hope and pray you are right about this not changing gun laws. Kindergarten ears, two weeks before Christmas though...once the memorials start, and all the little kids pictures start getting flooded on TV...I do worry.
