Why I am a newly-minted member of NRA

Over 250,000 Americans have joined the NRA since the Sandy Hook tragedy in December. I am one of them.

Why did all these folks decide to sign up?

Well probably for the same reasons I did. At first glance, I’m not your typical NRA member. I’m Jewish, Ivy League educated (Columbia University, Class of ’83, President Obama’s classmate in fact), and have even been a member of the mainstream media (I started my career as an anchorman and host for CNBC, then called the Financial News Network).

I'm not the world's biggest gun guy. I'm not a collector. Being around guns is not second nature for me.

250k, what a paltry and pathetic number. So what's that now 5% of gun owners?
I am apalled at the apathy

Interesting info from the article. Much more there. Even some stats from criminals and how the good guys having guns affected them.

Quote:Here are a few proven facts that are too often missing from the gun debate (Thanks to Gun Owners of America and ZeroHedge.com for these statistics):

Based on a 2000 study, Americans use guns to defend themselves from crime and violence 989,883 times annually. Banning guns would leave about 1,000,000 Americans defenseless from criminals who have no problem acquiring guns illegally.

A nationwide survey reported over a five-year period 3.5% of households had a member who used a gun to protect themselves, their family, or their property. This also adds up to about the same 1,000,000 incidents annually.

Each year about 200,000 women use a gun to defend themselves from a sexual crime or abuse.

The Carter Justice Department found that of more than 32,000 attempted rapes, 32% were actually committed. But when a woman was armed with a gun or knife, only 3% of the attempted rapes were actually successful. More recent studies all point towards a figure of 2.5 million -- that’s the new expert guesstimate of how many times Americans defend themselves from violent criminals each year.
Bottom line: guns save lives.

priell3, you failed us! You had the perfect opportunity to stop all of this by converting Obama when you went to school with him! How dare you! Tongue

Seriously, though, I am glad you decided to join the NRA (or any other pro-gun politically active group like the GOA, etc.)! welcome

Hey, there's that "leverage" thing we'd been discussing prior to the elections in November!

Such a shame our friends in the Paul Nation don't understand the concept.

DNC union voters with firearms may start actually learning about it now. Except the imaginary pro-union leverage they'd hoped for is evaporating in favor of expanding socialism and draconian fascist gun control. Which I'm sure they'll spend some time defending.

250k in a month? Pathetic?

Considering that the NRA already has a huge membership who can't "rejoin" a group they're already a member of, it really is quite a large number.

Remember...they were NOT members the day of Sandy Hook...NOW they are.
