Widow wins $23 Billion (not a typo) in smoking lawsuit.

Ok, here's my take. I used to be a smoker and quit when my daughter was born because I knew the dangers. I think people were misled about the risks at one point in time as well. I feel sorry for her loss and from what I've read she should have won her case but for over TWENTY THREE BILLION DOLLARS?!?!?! Seems extremely excessive to me.

Quote:The jury in the case Cynthia Robinson v. R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company sided Friday night with Robinson, the widow of a longtime smoker who died of lung cancer in 1996, to award her more than $16 million in compensatory damages and $23 billion in punitive damages

Watch The Insider, starring Russel Crowe and Al Pacino. Never heard of it? That's because the tobacco industry stepped all over it. It's about Dr. Jeffrey Weigands, hired by a tobacco company to understand, physiologically, what causes addiction in the human body. He was lead to believe that his research would make cigarettes safer. Instead, his research was being taken down the hall, given to another chemist, who was using the info to make cigarettes more addictive.

Apparently the objective was to institute of corporate "death penalty" against the manufacturer.

Well, if "corporations are people," maybe that's fair.

Cigarettes kill more people than all of the murderers in prison combined, and they are deliberately marketed to vulnerable populations (it's really bad overseas and in 3rd world countries).

I'm sure it'll be overturned on appeal, though.

Just as I'm sure it'll make not one iota of difference in the behavior of tobacco companies.

I quit smoking 12 years ago, got married 11 years ago, had a kid, and now I have no free time.

I demand compensation.

Everything eventually winds up on HBO, video, and then in the Walmart $5 box. Who do you know heard, or did you hear, of it as a first run movie, starring two of the biggest actors in Hollywood?

“released in 1,809 theaters on November 5, 1999”
“Nominated for 7 Academy Awards”

Changing my mind to: They did a real shit job.
