Quote:Woman, 35, had her arm AMPUTATED because 'police handcuffs were too tight'

A Pittsburgh woman is suing authorities after she had to have her arm amputated because police officers used ‘excessive force’ while they arrested her and refused to give her access to a doctor.

The mother-of-three, Amy Needham, 35, of Ross, says the officers entered her home to execute an arrest warrant for failing to show up to a preliminary hearing.

When sheriff's office employees arrived, Needham said she was using the bathroom, but they broke down the bathroom door.

They shocked her with a Taser, applied arm bars and wrist locks, and put on handcuffs 'that were too tight' before taking her to Allegheny County Jail, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

According to her attorney, Marvin Leibowitz, the tight handcuffs caused her to suffer compartment syndrome, a limb- and life-threatening condition that occurs after an injury.

It happens when there is insufficient blood supply to muscles and nerves due to increased pressure within the compartment, such as the arm, leg or any enclosed space within the body.

To punish and enslave. Only asking for $75,000?
tolerance for failure meter... LOW
The officer was just doing his job. What's with all the cop bashing going on here?
Meanwhile, 889,398 other criminals suffered only minor discomfort from being cuffed yesterday.

Strikes me as an odd amount. Way too low for loss of limb. A decent myoelectric prosthesis runs 100k.
I don't suffer from insanity.
I enjoy every minute of it.
I wonder what he preliminary hearing was for?

While I certainly do not advocate cop violence, I'm going to guess she ran into the bathroom as soon as the cop arrived, and the cop thought she was trying to escape out a window. She probably was.

Criminal stories are probably often just like teenager stories about teachers....always the victim, but always a second side to the story.

Docket sheets for that name in Allegheny county show charges of Disorderly Conduct and Resisting Arrest, as well as two motor vehicle violations. Clearly a hardened criminal that needed to be swept off of the streets promptly and forcefully.Rolleyes

I think in lieu of monetary reward, any individual found guilty/liable should have to lose their left arm, and since charging inmates is so popular, they should have to cover all related medical expenses for the necessary procedure(s) out of their own pocket.
I was always taught that after you handcuff someone you should be able to fit your pinky between the cuff and their wrist. Now I'm not saying you literally should do that, but you should be able to. This makes them not too loose and not too tight.

Sure, she should be "compensated", but to hear some people's reactions you'd think that the police intentionally caused the loss of her arm.
